BBC Live: Wu Man Pipa Recital

Wu Man Part of the all-new Bath Music Festival lineup at Invention

Wu Man is an internationally renowned pipa virtuoso, cited by the Los Angeles Times as the artist most responsible for bringing the pipa to the Western World. The pipa is a strong, lute-like Chinese instrument with a history of more than two thousand years, and Wu Man was the first artist to earn a master's degree in its use. On May 26th, she'll be performing live at Invention as part of the new Bath Music Festival lineup, in a show presented and recorded by BBC Radio 3.

Since her arrival in the U.S. in 1990 she has become a leading exponent of both traditional and contemporary pipa repertoire, inspiring the composition of a dozen new concertos and numerous chamber works by a new generation of Chinese composers including Chen Yi, Bun-Ching Lam, and Bright Sheng. In 1999 Wu Man was named winner of the City of Toronto/Glenn Gould Protégé Prize by Yo-Yo Ma.

Wu performs with Chinese traditional music groups but is also known for her interpretation of contemporary compositions, as well as her work in jazz and cross-cultural music. Many composers (including Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Chen Yi, Zhou Long, Gabriela Lena Frank, Evan Ziporyn, and others) have composed new works for her. In this year of the Beijing Olympics, Wu Man's artistry and repertoire is more relevant and enthralling than ever.

Doors open at 10.30pm, with tickets available via the Bath Music Festival site. Tickets cost £10, with normal concessions available.
