Pamelia Kurstin Part of the Bath Music Festival lineup at Invention

Pamelia Kurstin, the acclaimed, left-field theremin player from New York, will perform at Invention Studios on May 29th, in a performance presented and recorded by BBC Radio 3 as part of the Bath Music Festival lineup.

Pamelia hails from downtown New York and is now resident in Vienna. A world-renowned thereminist, she has played and recorded with David Byrne and Béla Flec and the Flecktones, as well as appearing on the television show Saturday Night Live; her gorgeous, spooky electronic music was swiftly picked up by John Zorn for his Zadek Label. Her background as an upright bass jazz player has lead her to her unique 'walking bass' theremin technique, but also expect blissfully weird sounds, gentle melodies and the odd classical tune thrown in.

You’ll instantly recognise the theremin’s inimitable sound from Brian Wilson’s ‘Good Vibrations’ - in the hands of a skilled player such as Pamelia, the instrument can be coaxed into producing nearly any sound. Under her sensitive control, the theremin's echoing strains become jazz, or lounge music, a violin or a bass. Her masterful vibrato and note flanging has earned her critical acclaim from aficionados of this early electronic instrument.

Doors open at 10.30pm, with tickets available via the Bath Music Festival site. Tickets cost £10, with normal concessions available.
