BBC Live: Horses Brawl

Horses Brawl Part of the Bath Music Festival lineup at Invention

On Wednesday 28th, Invention is proud to present the unique experimental folk group Horses Brawl, presented and recorded by BBC Radio 3 as part of the Bath Spa Music Festival lineup. This brilliant young group will present a new take on Medieval, Renaissance and Folk traditions, featuring a mix of period instruments including the fiddle, crumhorn, bowed guitar and viol.

Formed in 2003, the Norfolk based duo (joined by recorder virtuoso Phillip Thornby) have performed widely throughout England as well as having tracks from both their debut album and EP aired on Radio 3, Resonance FM and many others. Their debut self-titled album released in late 2005 received high acclaim in Songlines, Tradition and The Recorder Magazine, and their performances have been editor's picks in The Guardian Guide and The Independent. It was also in the fROOTs Top Ten album list and has had thousands of iTunes downloads all over the world.

With roots firmly in traditional English folk and early music from Europe, Horses Brawl are making their mark by being one of the few early music groups who perform in both concert and gig settings - from Queen Elizabeth Hall suppporting the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, to the Norwich Pop Underground Convention. Their virtuosity and originality draw in even the most unsuspecting audience members and they have been hailed by the BBC as a “music group to keep an eye on ... great stuff" (Verity Sharp Late Junction).

Performing with vivacity and verve, they re-work and re-compose traditional and ancient music, including everything from the tune to a 14th century Italian hopping dance and the mournful lament of a de-frocked monk to the Norfolk fiddle tune 'Shave the Donkey.' Horses Brawl released their second album 'DINDIRIN' in 2007 and will be touring with it across the UK throughout the year.

Doors open at 10.30pm, with tickets available via the Bath Music Festival site. Tickets cost £10, with normal concessions available.
