Invention Live - The Final Problem, Smokehand, The Colour Code

Smokehand An Invention Live Showcase Production

Invention Live is our new initiative to bring you some of the most talented artists in the area, whilst simultaneously providing the best local talent - whether big names or new lights - with a platform to publicise their skills. Under the Invention Live banner, we're putting on a series of semi-regular music nights, featuring great live music with a relaxed atmosphere. At 8.00pm we open our doors and bring in what we think are some of the most dynamic and exciting bands in the Bath and Bristol music scene. Keep an eye on the Invention calendar to stay up to date with all our upcoming Invention Live events! On Saturday May 17th, we're going Live to present three bands with truly original styles, in what we hope will be a pulse-elevating musical experience.

Alternative trio The Final Problem are touring London and the Southwest to promote their sound - featuring eastern European guitar with a solid percussion backbone governing their signature tempo shifts, the band's style combines classic rock n' roll with contemporary indie with dance elements. They've also been known to dabble in a second, groove-based style which takes in influences including Ice Cube and DJ Yella.

Smokehand hail from Cardiff, where the group has built up a loyal following for their exotic and dramatic live performances. A self-described "4-piece Dark Loungecore combo," the group blends jazz, Latino, classical and pop influences to create a signature style that recalls a post-modern Film Noir soundtrack; shifting between brooding, sinister vibes and soaring strains reminiscent of Sinatra. The band is strongly dedicated to their unusual sound, citing the necessity of genuine innovation in music. With recent appearances on BBC Radio Wales, the band is clearly on the way up, with their debut album 'The Last Train' available worldwide and receiving praise from the BBC for its "...lavish sound and crafted songwriting" and "elaborate arrangements taking in brass, strings, percussion, ocarina, mandolin and other varied instrumentation."

Smokehand on Smokehand:
"We've been described as 'Scott Walker singing Tom Waits songs' ... which is flattering and, if we're honest, not too far from the mark. If you want a band that goes from orchestral ballad, to Latin groove, to heavy rock, to bizarre fairground stomp ... then we're the band you've been waiting for."

Finishing the night with a bang, The Colour Code will be bringing their unique blend of alternate and progressive rock, featuring a list of influences longer than the band roster and including such luminaries as Tool, A Perfect Circle, Smashing Pumpkins and Dave Matthews Band. Originally formed in 2003 as "Manola," the charismatic foursome at the heart of The Colour Code have developed a reputation for superb showmanship and quality live performances. Featuring a high-energy sound incorporating roaring precision rhythms and a wide lyrical range, the band has built their own professional-standard recording studio to publish their first 11-song album, which will be sold online.

Praise for "The Colour Code":

"With charismatic, swooping vocals and sculptural tunecraft, they dive from Radioheaded, pained-and-reaching tales to some serious Rock fever ... it'll be a show you're glad you saw." - The Bull And Gate

"The Colour Code were probably the biggest surprise of the night - putting out more energy in their Placebo-meets-Tool styleset than an environment-destroying 100W lightbulb." - The Barfly

Tickets are just £5.00 on the door, with a special concessionary price of £4.00 for students - don't miss out! Performances start at 8.30pm sharp, so be sure to get in early.
